Well-known East-Midlands building contractors Baggaley and Jenkins Limited celebrate their 30th anniversary this year and are looking back on a remarkable pattern of sustained growth which has seen the business buck the trend by transforming itself from a two-man band to a multi-million turnover concern and substantial local employer.

Based in North Nottinghamshire, Baggaley and Jenkins Ltd began life in 1976 when Les Jenkins and Ken Baggaley – ably assisted by £120 worth of second hand van – began a damp proofing and timber remedial works business.

Progress in grant work and small extensions quickly followed and in 1981 the business became a limited company. By the mid-90s, just twenty years of a humble beginning, Baggaley and Jenkins Limited had achieved a multi-million pound turnover and was a well-respected supplier to local authorities, housing associations and the commercial sector. Today the company’s turnover is measured in tens of millions, it employs over 170 tradesmen, professionals and administrative staff and its regular customers include most local authorities in the East Midlands area, a number of large scale social landlords, and such well-known commercial enterprises as Center Parcs.

“There is no simple answer to achieving success in such a competitive market and location as ours,” said Managing Director Stuart Caddy, “and we have seen many companies fall by the wayside. However, it is clear that we could not have developed the business so successfully and rapidly unless we were placing a high quality product at the top of our priorities. Beyond that, I feel the company’s ability to nurture close working relationships with project partners – both customers and fellow suppliers – is the real key to our success and has certainly been responsible for the high degree of repeat business we enjoy.

“Another major factor is being willing to move with the times – our quality management systems, certified to BS EN ISO 9001 (2000), and our streamlined management structure have allowed us to work with major clients in the proactive way they require, and we have taken great trouble to treat our customers’ customers (such as local authority or housing association tenants) with the respect and care they deserve.

“And finally, though crucially, is the quality of our people. We directly employ almost all the people who work under the Baggaley and Jenkins banner. This allows us to offer firm guarantees about the quality of work we carry out and the high level of customer service we offer. Over the last thirty years we have steadily won an excellent reputation, and the dedication and competence of our people is right at the heart of that achievement.”
